Week 5 Thing 10

Image Fun
Sent an email with text and an image to someone using Image Chef. This is a cute and easy site to send personalized images thru emails. Here is the web address; http://www.imagechef.com/ Dabbled with ReadWriteThink comic creator tool and created a too simple 3 page comic, but found the image choices very limited, even for children. I viewed 10 pages of images in Comic Strip Generator and customized a Manga pic and saved it to my desktop. Take a look at some images from this site; http://www.comicstripgenerator.com/maker.asp More fun later...

Week 4 Thing 9

RSS newsfeeds
Located blogs and feeds of interest via the descriptions wiki list of school library blogs link. This was much easier, as the list all related to my field and I just had to click on a few to visit. I located a blog for Monarch Academy Library in Oakland, CA. I subscribed to it and found some ideas that I can use in the library with students. http://monarchlibrarian.blogspot.com/ Thanks to whomever did the footwork from CSLA! I'll continue to search this list for more blogs/wikis to add to my list of feeds.

In looking for feeds on interest via Topix.net, Syndic8.com and Technorati, I had little success. When I typed in 'school libraries/librarian' in the text field, it pulled up 0 results in two and the other pulled up only 1 newsfeed-that was not related to librianship. Rather, it was related to the cutting of library programs.

I need to spend more time getting comfortable with Google Reader and it's operations. Now, as I surf the web, I will be on the look out for the Blogger icon, so I can continue to add to my list of feeds.

WEEK 4 Thing 8

RSS feed aggregater
I viewed all the tutorials for this task twice and felt it would be simple enough. I started with Google Reader since I already had a Google acct. Added feeds to my list, but didn't find anything when I clicked on the site(s)? Where was the feed? Got tired. Went to bed. Next day, I thought, maybe I'll have more success with Blogline. So, opened an account and tried to use this site. Didn't find it any easier. Decided to stick with Google and give it one more shot, before I asked someone what I wasn't understanding. This time, when I opened my Google Reader Acct., there were the feeds I had saved the night before. Thank goodness. So, I went on to add more and quickly view a list of news articles to be sure I had access to some kind of news. In total, I added; Books-The New York Times, Never Ending Search, Nancy Pearl, Arizona Library Association and Library Advocate feeds. Some feeds I tried to subscribe to did not reveal anything? Kept trying. I think reviewing a few feeds every week would help librarians stay current on news and information that pertains to the profession. This takes the place of subscribing to a particular journal. RSS feeds allows you to skim various sites to see what appeals to you and/or what is of most importance to you at the time. I must say, I need to spend a lot more time familiarizing myself with Google Reader and it's functions, as well as learning more about which particular feeds would be most beneficial to me as an individual and librarian. This will come in time and with more experience. I am hopeful.

Week 3 Thing 7

Technology Trends
In completing 'thing 6,' I wasn't real excited about mashups. But, when I clicked on the Flickr fun link to see about creating a magazine cover just for fun, I found several tools I'd use for pleasure/professional purposes. I created a Pop Art Poster using a photo I had of good ol' Dr. Seuss. That came out cute! I have often seen Pop Art Photos on friends' Facebook wall, but never new how they did that? My son has one of him on his wall and I just love it. Now, I can be trendy too and make one of my own! This site has many fun tools I know I'd play around with myself and/or use with my students in the library; Mosaic Maker, Magazine Cover; Calendar, CD Cover, Cube, Captioner and the Top Camera ranking that is updated weekly. All of these plus more on one simple page. I like it. Wondering, however, why the URL address actually reads bighugelabs.com when I clicked on the Flickr fun link under the description for Thing 6? I'm sure there is a simple answer. It's exciting to find one site that has soo many fun, simple and creative tools that you can choose from with just one click! Didn't have to download any software and it's free. Great gift ideas. Visit bighugelabs.com

Week 3 Thing 6

Created my very own Trading Card today using bighuge.labs.com. Honestly, not the greatest site for this task. I would like to try other sites and post my trading card on my school library's homepage. I created my card with issues meaningful to me as an educator for children. It turned out OK, but I'd like a site that allows me to manipulate the graphics more. I might want to try one of the Curriuculum Connections suggested with this task, to use in the library with 5th graders.
